First impression of the tea estate is awesome, how lucky am I, I can't believe I can call this place home for the next two years, and wow, I hope I can work effectively enough to earn my place here. And all of that was just the scenic beauty of the countryside.
Miles and miles of tea fields. |
I am a bit apprehensive about how I will fulfill my duty as a health volunteer. I can teach young adults the basics of nutrition, proper hygiene, and the importance of safe sex... well, I could if I could speak the language!
Oh yeah, the icing on the cake, I saw monkeys in the trees on my first night! It was close to sunset, I went for a short walk hoping to see some birds, and I spotted monkeys. They were very close and jumping through the tree tops to get a better vantage place to look at me. There was maybe 15 that I could see. They were black and white (mostly short black fur with two white stripes of longer white fur down their sides), they had a long black tail with a puff of long white fur at the tip, and they were medium size, bigger than a capuchin but smaller than a baboon. They were very cute, hoping around the branches and peering at me through the leaves.
Hi Karen. Cay you help us locate you on the map? Like seeing where you are. I found a number of Health Centres but wasn't sure which was yours. The tea operation is huge and world wide!
ReplyDeleteLove your posts. Tom
Hi Tom, I couldn't find it on the map either! Hahah, I am literally off the map! So, the company has six estates in western Uganda. Mine is called Mwenge. It's about an hour by car, down a dirt road, northeast of Fort Portal.
ReplyDeleteWell, I found Ft Portal and I found references to the Mwenge estate of McLeod Russel but I couldn't find the actual farm and Health Centre site. Not surprised and it was fun trying. Roughly know where you are.
ReplyDeleteI found the nearest town to the tea estate! Ha, I'm almost on the map. It's called Kyarusozi. Driving through it, I didn't actually see anything I would want to visit, but I have two years to explore.
DeleteThis place looks beautiful! No phone wires or cell towers, just lush greenery for miles and miles. I'm sure you will make a difference to someone. Are you now living in an apartment?
ReplyDeleteI'll be in a guest house until my own house is ready. They still have to replace the front door and the windows (the Peace Corps requires glass that opens and bars for security (right now there is only wooden shutters, no glass or bars). I think that may take a while to accomplish, but the guest house is nice so I'm not worried.
